Why Rely on EV Charging? The Future Lies in Hydrogen Cartridges
In October 2024, Toyota launched portable Toyota Hydrogen cartridges (Toyota hydrogen car) for the first time in the history of the EV industry. Other automobile manufacturers like BMW, Hyundai and Honda are also moving towards Hydrogen as it is clean, sustainable and adaptable.
Hydrogen Cartridges for car are portable and sleek containers that store the Hydrogen gas. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) generate electricity through a chemical process known as Electrolysis.
Below are the main features of Hydrogen cartridges in electric vehicles (EVs):
- Compact and Portable: Small in size and hence are portable. This makes it easier to store them efficiently. This also improves their design and easy to carry or transport due to their light weight property.
- Replaceable: Can be quickly swapped out for a new one.
- Refueling: Replenishing energy or fuel for continued use and to get a better range.
- Compatibility: Compatible with FCEVs home appliances during power outage like it can power up a microwave for 3-4 hours approximately.
- Environment friendly: Eco-friendly aiming at greener, cleaner and sustainable environment.
Why would we need to bother EV charging stations when there are so many issues with the same?
Below are the top issues which every person owning an EV vehicle faces.
- Availability: As we all know, EV technology has taken birth in the last few years and is still in its early years. Due to this, the EV charging stations are limited in number, resulting in limited availability. EV cars are more in quantity but not the charging stations to meet the growing requirement. As a result, you can’t take risks going for longer distances.
- Charging time issues: In today’s world with high-tech technology, we have fast chargers that claim to charge your EV vehicles in a jiffy. But is that real or practical? All EV vehicle owners will agree that even after fast chargers, EV charging takes a lot of time, even sometimes more than gas cars. This is a deal breaker for EV cars since people in today’s EV era don’t have time to wait.
- No standard charging stations: Currently due to initial years of the technology, charging standards have not been standardised. We have multiple EV manufacturers who manufacture different EV chargers. For example Tesla’s Supercharger. But the problem is that all these non-standardised chargers have varying charging standards which may cause incompatibility issues with the EVs. There should be a standard for all EV manufacturers to use a standard charger to avoid any incompatibility issues.
- Crowded Charging Stations: Does anyone like to wait in Queues just to charge their cute EV vehicle? No one, we guess. When we have limited availability, it is obvious that the charging stations will be overcrowded, which will cause inconvenience to the owners.
- High Cost: If you are in an area where demand is high but supply is less, then obviously, the price of charging your costly EV vehicle will shoot up. This will burn a hole in your pocket, which EV already did when you bought it initially. The purpose of buying an EV is to reduce the cost in the long run, and high charging costs are killing that purpose.
The above challenges forced EV or battery manufacturers to come up with some innovations to find alternatives to EV charging stations.
Hydrogen Cartridges: Towards Sustainable Development
The working of Hydrogen cartridges involves storing the compressed hydrogen gas which is then converted to electricity through Electrolysis chemical reaction. This makes only water as a byproduct and hence it is safe. All this conversion is done by fuel cells and then this electricity is used to power the EV’s electric motor.
Since we use renewable resources, it is clean and sustainable.
Main components:
- Hydrogen Cartridge: Stores compressed hydrogen gas.
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell: Converts hydrogen into electricity by combining it with oxygen from the air.
- Electricity: Generated by the fuel cell to power the EV.
- Motor Power: The electricity drives the vehicle’s electric motor.
- Water Emission: The only byproduct released as water vapour.
Now we can conclude the article and hope we got the answer to Why Rely on EV Charging and How the Future Lies in Hydrogen Cartridges.
